5 reasons why to choose open-source solutions

The choice of technologies and the digitalization of the organization means committing to specific solutions. That is why it is good to consider their long-term functioning and place in the organization. Not only acquisition costs but also maintenance costs. Consider what it would mean if you wanted to add or subtract something in the future? How will the solution work with other programs and applications that you use? In recent years, there has been a growing interest in so-called open-source solutions and has already controlled even 90% of the Internet. Here are some reasons why.

1. Control and flexibility

At a time when it’s beyond human power to control which programs and applications track what data and most people reveal more about themselves on social networks during one week than to their friends in a lifetime, transparent software is priceless. Open-source software allows not only to look into the source code but also to develop it. This gives the owner the freedom to work with different suppliers or customize it internally according to the needs of the organization.

2. Lower price

At the outset, it should be made clear that open source doesn´t free. Sometimes the software is actually provided to users for free. This is usually the case if it is, for example, a university project or funded by various associations or companies. As is the case with Linux. The fact is, however, that the cost of open-source is lower than when acquiring, developing, and updating proprietary, ie closed software.

3. Security

There are studies highlighting the increased security of open-source software. How is it possible? It is true that two heads are better than one. In the case of an open-source solution, where anyone can look at the code, errors are detected and fixed faster.

4. Worldwide community

The great advantage of open-source is a huge global community of experts and enthusiasts. So finding someone you can consult with, who understands the solution you have picked, and finding a variety of recommendations, tips, and studies is very easy. For closed software, on the other hand, you often have to rely only on the manufacturer and their willingness to share certain things.

5. Stability

This point is related to the previous one. Open-source solutions offer long-term support and updates. Usually somewhere in the world there is someone who improves and updates the software. As a result, solutions are often very innovative and quality is guaranteed by the number of people who test and evaluate progress.

If you are not sure whether the open solution is suitable for your organization, do not hesitate to contact us. We will be happy to talk about it with you.
